Are We Entering The Era of The Best Stop Motion Animation?
(Above are some photos of the Anomalisa Q&A at Fantastic Fest 2015. Charlie Kaufman is the dude in the tie.)
With this release of the stop motion video for Radiohead’s “Burn the Witch,” my mind has wondered over to Anomalisa the new stop -motion film from Charlie Kaufman. The film screened at Fantastic Fest this past fall, and was in release enough that it was nominated for an Academy Award.
While Anomalisa isn’t “real” it is one of the realist stories I’ve seen, despite the fact that it’s all stop-motion clay. I can’t do better than Anthony Lane writing about the film in The New Yorker.
Is this now going to be the era of the best stop -motion art ever? Are people so done with CGI that they want their not-real stories to not even pretend to be real anymore?
If you haven’t seen it, you can rent Anomalisa on Amazon Video.
